“Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughe

s
1.  What does the woman do to the boy afterhe tries to steal her purse?
She drags him to her house.

Why does she do this?
Because she wants to help him.

Why doesn’t she turn him over to the police?Because she wants him to learn what he did was wrong.

2.  What did you think Mrs. Jones was going to do to the boy originally? What makes you think that? At first i thought she was going to turn him into the police. I thought this because she hit him and had put him in a half nelson

3.  How would you have reacted in Mrs. Jones’s place, if you were Roger? Why? I would have freaked out, because i wouldn't think that someone of her age could do that.

4.  Make inferences (draw conclusions) about Roger’s home life? Tell what makes you think that. I think that Rogers parents are never home so he has to find a way to eat and to buy stuff that he needs or wants. I think that because of the part in the story when Mrs. Jones made him wash his face because it was dirty.

5.  What might be some other reasons why Roger tries to steal? What in the story makes you think that? Maybe his parents don't care about him so he finds ways to get is own food and other stuff. Because Mrs. Jones noticed that it looked like he hadn't ate in awhile.
6. Why doesn’t Roger run out of the room when he has the chance? What makes you think that? He didn't run because he knew that she trusted him so he decided to trust her. Because she left her purse where he could of grabbed it and left, but he didn't.
7. Mrs. Jones left her purse unattended and went into the other room!  What is she showing by this action? Why did she do that? She is showing that she trusts him. She did it so he would know that she trusts him.
8.  Explain the phrase: “because shoes come by devilish like that, will burn your feet.” If you have to do something bad to get what you want then if you get it you will be reminded of what you did to get that.

15.  The last paragraph begins with “The boy wanted to say something else but couldn’t do it.”  What else do you think he would have like to be able to say to her besides “Thank you”? Why that? I think maybe he wanted to tell her about his life because she was nice enough to tell hers
17.  Do you think at the beginning if Roger had been successful in stealing the purse, would he have bought shoes with the money?  Why or why not? Yes, I think he would have because thats what he said he wanted to get shoes.

At the end, now that he has been given $10, will he use it to buy shoes? Why/Why not? I think he will, because that way he can wear his shoes and always remember what Mrs. Jones taught him.
